Types of Fish in Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is one of the few lakes in Banff National Park that permits motorized boating and fishing, making it a popular spot for anglers. The lake hosts a variety of cold-water fish species, many of which thrive in its deep, glacial waters.

1. Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush)

Lake trout are the dominant sport fish in Lake Minnewanka and are highly prized by anglers. These deep-water predators can grow quite large—some over 20 pounds—and are best caught using trolling techniques in deeper parts of the lake.

2. Rocky Mountain Whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni)

This native species is abundant in the lake and typically found in shallower areas or near the bottom. They are popular for fly fishing and are known for their mild flavor when cooked.

3. Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis)

Another cold-water species, lake whitefish are commonly caught using bait and small jigs. They are less aggressive than lake trout but can be plentiful in the right conditions.

4. Longnose Sucker (Catostomus catostomus)

Though not commonly targeted by sport anglers, these bottom-feeding fish are part of the lake's natural ecosystem and often caught incidentally.

5. Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

While not native, rainbow trout have been occasionally introduced into the lake and may be caught near the shoreline or tributaries, especially in spring and early summer.

Fishing in Lake Minnewanka requires a national park fishing permit, which can be purchased online or at local visitor centers. Anglers should also be aware of Parks Canada's regulations regarding catch limits, gear restrictions, and seasonal closures to protect the lake's sensitive aquatic ecosystem.
